Norwegian Statoil seeks lease for pilot offshore wind project in Maine
Dec 2, 2011 - The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) on Wednesday said it had received a commercial lease application for a pilot offshore wind power project in the Gulf of Maine from Norwegian oil major Statoil ASA (OSL:STL).
The Hywind Maine pilot project will include pilot floating-platform wind turbines. Statoil has proposed the project in response to a request for proposal issued by Maine Public Utilities Commission in 2010, the company said in its lease application.
BOEM said it had already reviewed the lease application and the technical and financial qualification review is under way. The area identified in the application is subject to task force consultation and to change. The members of the BOEM's Maine Task Force will meet on December 8 to review Statoil's request for a lease.
Statoil added that it was considering several sites globally for its first floating wind turbine project.
