Swedish energy storage specialist Northvolt AB will pour USD 200 million (EUR 164.9m) into building a new battery manufacturing site in Poland, seeking to launch production in 2022.
The factory for battery modules and systems will be located in Gdansk and will have an initial output of 5 GWh, while its future potential capacity is planned to reach 12 GWh, Northvolt said on Friday. The facility will cover around 50,000 sq m (538,200 sq ft) and will be built in two phases.
Northvolt noted that the new base will enable it to ramp up its manufacturing capacity of battery modules and systems and start offering complete battery system solutions across grid and industrial markets. Lithium-ion cells for the new production will be sourced from the company’s battery gigafactory in Skelleftea, northern Sweden.
Development works on the project have already begun and construction works on the first phase are planned to be launched this autumn. Initial production is aimed to start in 2022. Overall, 500 jobs will be created, Northvolt said.
The Swedish firm has been producing battery modules in Gdansk for three years. Its production site will also include an engineering research and development (R&D) centre.
