Northumberland Estates applies for 100 MW of batteries in northern England

Northumberland Estates on Tuesday said it has filed planning applications for two battery energy storage systems (BESS) of 50 MW each to be located in North Tyneside in northern England.

The move marks the business’ entry into the renewables market, Northumberland Estates, a development and investment company based in the North East, said. It further shared long-term plans to invest in solar energy.

The projects, which will use lithium-ion technology, come in recognition of battery storage’s key role in the transition from fossil fuels to renewables.

“Progress towards renewables requires a significant change in the UK’s energy infrastructure and backup technologies, such as battery energy storage systems, are vital to secure the supply for use outside of sunlight hours,” commented Northumberland Estates director of development David Straughan.
