August 14 (Renewables Now) - German wind turbine maker Nordex (ETR:NDX1) today introduced the N163/5.X, a new 5-MW-plus unit for low wind speeds with an increased rotor diameter compared to that of the N149/5.X model.

The latest onshore wind turbine is part of the Delta4000 series and takes over the nacelle, gearbox and all system components from the N149/5.X. What is new is the single-piece rotor blade with a length of nearly 80 metres (262.5 ft) that results in a 14% increase of the rotor diameter to a total of 163 metres.

Nordex will initially offer the turbine with hub heights between 118 and 164 metres, and with the option to include a cold climate version. It anticipates to begin series production in 2021.

The company will present the N163/5.X at the German Husum Wind Fair, which takes place from September 10 to September 13, 2019.
