Nordex installs first units of new 6-MW class turbines

Germany's Nordex SE (ETR:NDX1) is installing the first units of its new N163/6.X 6-MW class wind turbine model at wind farms sites in the Netherlands ahead of the IEC type certification process.

Some nine months after launching the 6-MW variant in the Delta4000 series, the turbine maker is working to install 15 of these machines at the Zeebiestocht and Olsterwind wind farms in the Dutch province of Flevoland, it said on Wednesday.

The company will then proceed to take power and noise measurements and conduct validation of mechanical loads to secure the IEC type certificate.

The N163/6.X turbine is suitable for medium and light-wind conditions. It boasts about 80-metre (262.5-feet) rotor blades and a rotor swept area of 20,867 square metres. Some options, depending on the market, include different tower heights going up to 164 metres, a cold climate version and the advanced anti-icing system for rotor blades.

Nordex said it designed the turbine with a focus on “selected core markets in Europe”. It has already secured several orders for the N163/6.X, including one for the 80 MW Pjelax-Bole-Kristinestad Norr wind farm cluster in Finland.

Serial production is scheduled for the beginning of 2023.
