Finnish state-owned energy company Gasum Oy will supply locally produced wind electricity to tire maker Nokian Tyres under a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

The power will come from a wind park in North Ostrobotnia and will meet demand from Nokian Tyres' Finnish factory and from the Vianor chain of service centres in Finland. Supply will start in 2023, the companies said on Friday.

Nokian Tyres has used 100% renewable electricity in Finland in the past two years. The latest deal provides more stability in green energy availability, the company’s VP of Quality & Sustainability, Teppo Huovila, said.

“Wind power has a crucial role to play in meeting the growing demand for greener energy solutions and looking ahead we will increase our acquisition of wind generated power,” commented Tommy Mattila, VP of Industry at Gasum. The company wants to increase the supply of renewable energy across the Nordics.

Nokian Tyres already uses solar electricity from onsite arrays at its warehouse in Nokia, Finland, the factory in Dayton, USA, and the new testing center in Spain..
