New York nods to transmission project for 924-MW Sunrise Wind

The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday gave the thumbs up to the construction of a transmission line that will carry electricity from the 924-MW Sunrise Wind project off Long Island to the state's existing power grid.

The wind farm and the related transmission project are the work of Sunrise Wind LLC, the 50/50 joint venture (JV) between New England utility Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) and Denmark’s Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED).

The 25-mile (40.2-km) link will deliver electricity from the future wind farm to an existing substation in Brookhaven, Suffolk County. Under the plan, a high-voltage, 320-kV direct current (DC) submarine export cable bundle with a length of up to 5.2 miles will enter New York State territorial waters three nautical miles from land and will transition to an onshore cable connected to a converter station on land.

The next step in the permitting process is to gain approval for the transmission project's environmental management.

Sunrise Wind will be New York’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm and will be capable of powering almost 600,000 homes in the state. It will be located within a lease area in federal waters 30 miles east of Montauk Point. Construction works are slated to begin as early as next year, with its 84 Siemens Gamesa turbines planned to go online by 2025.
