New York governor Andrew Cuomo has awarded 20-year off-take contracts with a combined value of USD 175 million (EUR 156.4m) to five renewable energy projects totalling 116 MW, it was announced Wednesday.
The five schemes were competitively selected through the state’s 10th Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) Main Tier solicitation. The weighted average award price amounted to USD 24.57 per MWh of power generation over the 20-year period.
The biggest winner in the latest solicitation is RES America Developments Inc, which received a contract for its 100-MW Ball Hill wind farm that is to be built in Chautauqua County.
Meanwhile, Orbit Energy Inc won a deal for its 9.6-MW anaerobic digestion biogas-to-electricity facility in Staten Island. The plant will run on food waste and other organic materials sourced from local restaurants, supermarkets and food producers.
Northbrook Lyons Falls LLC won a contract for a project that involves expanding an existing hydropower facility in Lewis County by 5.2 MW to over 11 MW. Morgan Stanley is also among the winners with a project to install a 790-kW fuel cell at its Manhattan offices.
The other company that was awarded a contract is Erie Boulevard Hydropower LP, a unit of Brookfield Renewable Energy Group, which seeks to deploy a 560-kW minimum flow turbine at a hydropower plant in Oswego County.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) plans to issue one more RPS Main Tier solicitation for large renewables next year. To date, the 10 RPS Main Tier solicitations have financed a total of 69 projects, generating over 5.3 million MWh of electricity a year.
