New York adds 440 MW of renewable power transmission capacity

A USD-120-million (EUR 107m) project has been completed in the state of New York, adding up to 440 MW of transmission capacity and thus enabling more renewable power to flow from upstate to meet energy demand in more-populated downstate regions.

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) and New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) jointly implemented the Marcy South Series Compensation scheme as part of the governor’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) strategy, a key objective of which is to ensure a 50% renewables share in the state by 2030.

The project involved the installation of three capacitor banks that contain equipment providing greater control of power movement. Such series capacitors increase voltage and maintain it at a constant level, thereby improving transmission efficiency.

NYSEG intends at a future date to transfer its USD-61-million portion of the project to New York Transco, a public-private partnership of investor-owned utilities.
