The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Gas Technology Institute (GTI) this week announced the launch of the Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI), whose goal is to speed up work on new low-carbon energy technologies.
The five-year international collaborative initiative has 18 anchor sponsors, among which are major US energy companies like Dominion Energy, Southern California Edison, Duke Energy, Portland General Electric, Exelon and Southern Company. LCRI will support the development and demonstration of low-carbon electric generation technologies and low-carbon energy carriers, such as hydrogen, ammonia, synthetic fuels, and biofuels.
“Achieving ambitious targets will require technologies and processes beyond those widely available today. This global initiative will advance affordable pathways to economy-wide decarbonization,” said Arshad Mansoor, president of EPRI.
The initiative launched with seed funding of USD 10 million (SUD 8.5m) from the EPRI collaborative. EPRI and GTI say they expect it to be leveraged many times over its USD-100-million target through public and private collaboration.
A virtual round table on low-carbon resources will be hosted by the two institutes on September 1.
