Sep 20, 2011 - Finnish oil refiner Neste Oil Oyj (HEL:NES1V) announced today the start-up of its renewable diesel plant in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, after the facility was completed within the initially planned time frame and budget.
The Rotterdam plant, which utilises Neste Oil's proprietary NExBTL technology, can produce up to 800,000 tonnes a year. Almost any vegetable oil or waste fat can be used as raw material. The facility has some 150 employees.
The new plant, which is part of an EUR-1.5-billion (USD 2bn) investment programme aimed at increasing Neste Oil's biodiesel production, will boost the company's total annual capacity to 2 million tonnes.
Neste Oil operates one renewable diesel plant in Singapore and another two in Porvoo, southern Finland. The plants, including the new one, can produce both biodiesel and renewable aviation fuel.
Neste Oil's NExBTL renewable diesel is compatible with all diesel engines and existing fuel distribution systems. It can be blended with fossil diesel or used without blending. NExBTL helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40-80% compared to fossil diesel, according to the refiner.
