October 12 (Renewables Now) - Finnish oil and renewable products maker Neste Corp (HEL:NESTE) and Air BP, the aviation division of BP plc (LON:BP), have teamed up to explore ways to increase the supply of sustainable aviation fuel for airlines.

The objective of the partnership, announced on Thursday, is to make a co-branded sustainable aviation fuel available at airports across Air BP's global network.

The collaboration brings together Neste's expertise in producing and blending renewable jet and fuel and Air BP's customer relationships and supply chain development expertise, the companies said.

Sustainable aviation fuel is meant to refer to blends of conventional kerosene with renewable hydrocarbons made from, for instance, recycled cooking oil, which can be used in aircraft without the need for technical modifications.

"Working together, we can find the best ways of developing robust supply chains to ensure that renewable jet fuel is more widely accessible," said Kaisa Hietala, Neste executive vice president renewable products.

Air BP chief executive Jon Platt said that the partnership will allow the company to continue to support its customers with their low carbon ambitions.

The aviation industry aims to achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and to reduce by 50% net aviation carbon emissions by 2050.
