March 13 (Renewables Now) - NEC Energy Solutions Inc (NEC ES) announced today it has been awarded a contract by Dutch firm GIGA Storage to supply the battery for a 12-MW storage project in the Netherlands.
The project, named GIGA Rhino, received a subsidy from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency RVO and raised EUR 3.7 million ( USD 4.1m) for its construction and operation through a crowdfunding campaign.
The storage facility will be located at the Wageningen University & Research (WUR) test centre in Lelystad next to the Neushoorntocht wind farm. The system will enable greater integration of renewables and help balance the local smart grid.
GIGA Storage will own and manage the system. Besides WUR and NEC ES, local smart grid operator Windnet is also taking part in the project.
