(SeeNews) - Dec 20, 2013 - Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has started negotiations to participate in the 400-MW Wikinger offshore wind power project of Iberdrola (MCE:IBE) in the Baltic Sea, daily La Voz de Galicia said today.
Navantia is interested in the production of jackets for the 5 MW wind power turbines and the floating substations part of the project, which could be produced at the shipyards of the company in Fene and Puerto Real.
Iberdrola, however, has already launched negotiations with other potential partners in the project and Navantia will have to face the strong competition of UK, Polish and German shipbuilders.
Wikinger will be located some 30 km (18.6 miles) off the coast of the German Island of Rugen in the Baltic Sea and the total investment in its construction is expected to stand at EUR 1.6 billion (USD 2.184bn).
Iberdrola plans to present the final planning of the project in the beginning of next year, in order to start the construction of the wind farm in 2015 and to put it on stream in 2016.
