Narec to test Samsung Heavy's 7-MW offshore wind turbine

Jun 20, 2013 - South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries (KRX:010140) will conduct performance tests of the drive train for its 7-MW offshore wind turbine this summer at the UK's National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) in Northumberland, northeastern England.

In a statement on Wednesday, Narec said that the nacelle will be transported and installed at Narec's 15-MW wind turbine test facility. The machine will be subject to a six-month testing scheme, operating under simulated offshore conditions, including extreme weather circumstances.

The British Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) has spent GBP 25 million (USD 38.5m/EUR 29.1m) for the Narec testing station for the development, delivery and commissioning of the test rig by the power conversion segment of US conglomerate General Electric Co (NYSE:GE) and MTS Systems Corp, Narec noted. Its wind turbine nacelle test rig kicked off operations at the beginning of last month.
