Mitsui, Idemitsu, Inpex launch geothermal drilling study in Japan
Jul 26, 2013 - Japanese refiner Idemitsu Kosan Co Ltd (TYO:5019) and local sector players Inpex Corp (TYO:1605) and Mitsui Oil Exploration have commenced drilling activities for geothermal power at two sites in Japan.
In a press release on Thursday, Idemitsu Kosan said that the companies are drilling in the Amemasudake area in Japan's western island of Hokkaido and in the Kurikoma national park in Akita prefecture on Honshu island.
Drilling works at the two locations will be conducted through November, Idemitsu Kosan said. The companies will drill more wells until 2015 and assess the result before starting the next stage of the study, which features drilling of production demo wells, tests for steam production and hot water reinjection, assessment of the geothermal reservoirs and environmental impact examination.
The drilling operations are part of the second phase of a joint geothermal energy study, which Idemitsu and Inpex launched in June 2011. Mitsui Oil Exploration, a unit of Japanese trader Mitsui & Co Ltd (TYO:8031), entered the partnership last December.
