Mitsubishi unit eyes stake in 370-MW Belgian offshore wind project

A wholly-owned subsidiary of Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp (TYO:8058) is seeking to buy into the 370-MW Norther offshore wind project in the Belgian North Sea.

Eneco Wind Belgium NV, Elnu NV and Mitsubishi’s Diamond Offshore Wind Holdings II BV (DOWH) have notified the European Commission (EC) that they plan to jointly control the project company -- Norther NV. The latter is currently a 50/50 joint venture between Dutch utility Eneco Holding NV and Belgium’s Elicio NV, which, in turn, are the respective owners of Eneco Wind Belgium and Elnu.

The commission is expected to respond to the application by November 22, 2016.

As previously announced, Norther has selected MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as preferred supplier of wind turbines with its V164-8.0 MW model. Commissioning is planned for 2019.

According to the notification, Mitsubishi currently has no wind power activities in Belgium.
