Mitsubishi to build offshore wind turbine R&D centre in Scotland
(ADPnews) - Dec 6, 2010 - Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011) will inject up to GBP 100 million (USD 157m/EUR 118m) in the development of its offshore wind turbine R&D centre in Edinburgh.
The company announced last week that the investment will be implemented via its subsidiary Mitsubishi Power Systems Europe Ltd. The latter has already taken over Artemis Intelligent Power (AIP), the Edinburgh University spin-off consisting of a team of engineers and technicians specialised in hydraulic system development.
The companies will work to deliver the hydraulic technology in a large-scale offshore wind turbine. The initial target will be the 32 GW Round 3 offshore wind farm plans promoted by the British government as an important national initiative.
The centre is anticipated to maintain the 25 existing jobs at AIP, and create around 30 extra engineering positions in 2011. Moreover, around 200 jobs are expected to be created by 2015 as MPSE moves towards mass production.
