Mitsubishi Power wins SDG&E order for 39 MW/180 MWh of battery projects

US utility San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) has picked technology by Mitsubishi Power for 39 MW/180 MWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in California’s San Diego region.

The order includes Mitsubishi Power’s Emerald storage solution, to be deployed at four microgrid facilities that are slated to begin operations in the middle of next year, SDG&E said on Thursday.

The selected solution for the sites includes an integrated plant controller with a real-time monitoring and supervisory control platform.

The Elliot, Clairemont, Paradise, and Boulevard projects were approved by the California Public Utilities Commission in June. Once commissioned, the BESS will provide dispatchable power during periods of high demand, such as hot summer days and peak evening hours.

The four battery facilities will be connected to existing infrastructure in the San Diego region. They will be serviced by Mitsubishi Power under a 10-year contract.

“By expanding our energy storage portfolio, we are helping our region and critical community facilities become more resilient,” said Fernando Valero, SDG&E director of Advanced Clean Technology.
