Minesto wins consent for 1st tidal kite installation in Wales

Swedish tidal energy company Minesto AB announced on Wednesday it has obtained a marine licence for a 0.5-MW commercial-scale installation in Holyhead Deep, North Wales.

The developer of the Deep Green kite-turbine technology got the licence from consenting authority Natural Resources Wales after conducting an in-depth Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Such a licence is needed for all kind of offshore construction work and deposits in UK waters, Minesto noted.

The company will proceed with the installation of a single Deep Green device at the particular site off the coast of Anglesey later this year.

Minesto has already unveiled its plan to deploy its first tidal energy array in Holyhead Deep. In February, the company said it had asked for UK consenting authorities’ scoping opinion on the potential development of an 80-MW project there. Minesto plans to develop the Holyhead Deep site in three phases as part of a deploy-and-monitor approach, it said at the time.
