Dong Energy and MHI Vestas Offshore Wind have jointly installed for onshore tests replicas of the towers and foundations that will be used during the construction of the 258-MW Burbo Bank Extension in UK waters.
To be more specific, the two companies have deployed a V164-8.0 MW wind turbine test tower and foundation onshore to test several installation and commissioning procedures ahead of the commencement of offshore works on the wind project. The 97-metres high tower was installed opposite the MHI Vestas nacelle factory on the Danish island of Fuenen. It is expected to be in place for up to two years.
“The test tower and transition piece will allow us to avoid potentially costly interface misalignments, and to maximise efficiency and safety procedures during offshore construction of cables, foundations and turbines as well,” explained Claus Bojle Moller, Dong Energy’s project director for Burbo Bank Extension.
As part of the Burbo Bank Extension wind project, MHI Vestas will install 32 pieces of 8-MW wind turbines off the coast of Liverpool Bay. Installation is scheduled to start in the autumn of 2016, while commissioning is expected to be finalised next year. The turbines will be pre-assembled in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
