MHI Vestas Offshore Wind today confirmed it has received a firm and unconditional wind turbine supply order from the developer of the 406-MW Horns Rev 3 offshore wind project in Danish waters, also known as Horns Reef 3.
The 50/50 joint venture between Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011) and Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) will supply, install, commission and service 49 pieces of its V164-8.0 MW turbines. The associated full-scope service contract has a term of five years.
MHI Vestas pointed out that the machines it is to deliver will be optimised for the specific project and will use a power mode that allows each of them to deliver a maximum output of 8.3 MW.
The order was made by Swedish energy group Vattenfall AB, which made the final investment decision concerning the project in June 2016. Commenting on the news about the contract with MHI Vestas, Vattenfall Wind’s head Gunnar Groebler said that “Horns Rev 3 is the cheapest recent offshore project”.
The wind farm will be built about 34 km (21 miles) off the west coast of Denmark in the North Sea. Once completed, the plant will be able to generate an estimated 1.78 million MWh a year, which is enough to meet the annual consumption of about 400,000 Danish homes.
