Mass Megawatts close to completing wind augmentation system

Aug 21, 2012 - US wind power technology firm Mass Megawatts Wind Power Inc (OTC:MMMW) said today it is close to completing its new wind augmentation system.

The wind augmentation system is based on a simple and inexpensive wind-focusing technique that increases the speed of the wind directed towards the turbine by an average of 70%. The higher wind speed results in a three-fold increase in turbine’s electricity output.

The new system would eliminate the need for turbine towers higher than 80 feet (24 m) that have so far been used to reach heights with adequate wind velocity. The technology would also enable the profitable operation of turbines even in lower wind-speed locations.

The company estimates that the use of horizontal turbine blades would reduce the cost per rated kilowatt to below USD 1,000 (EUR 802) and close to USD 600 upon the launch of mass production, compared with USD 1,500 to USD 2,000 per rated kilowatt in traditional wind turbines.

The company said that it would soon upload a video on its website comparing identical turbines with and without the new wind augmentation unit.
