Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company Masdar and the Taaleri SolarWind II fund have inaugurated three onshore wind farms of a combined 51.4 MW in Poland that the two investors own jointly.
Masdar and Taaleri, which is an investment company focused on utility-scale wind and solar projects, each bought 50% of the projects in January in a deal that marked their debut in the Polish renewable energy sector. The decision to invest in the local market was based on the growing demand for clean energy and the availability of the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme and commercial offtake contracts.
The projects include the 37.4-MW Mlawa wind park in the northern province of Mazowieckie and the Grajewo project, which combines two wind parks of a total of 14 MW located in Podlaskie, in the north-east of the country. The combined electricity production of the three parks is equal to the annual consumption of 90,000 Polish households and is expected to save 146,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
The three facilities were developed by Vestas while V-Ridium Power Services was in charge of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and provides technical and commercial management services. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), DNB Polska and TFI PZU backed the projects with financing.
Masdar and Taaleri plan a further expansion in the Polish market through their joint venture Masdar Taaleri Generation which was created in 2019 to develop renewable energy projects in Central and South-Eastern Europe. The development vehicle is working on its first project in Greece -- a 65-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, in cooperation with two local partners. Its current projects include also the 158-MW Cibuk 1 wind farm in Serbia and the development and construction of the 200-MW Baynouna Solar Energy Project in Jordan.
