UK subsea cables provider JDR Cable Systems Ltd is set to supply cables for the 25-MW Windfloat Atlantic floating wind farm in Portugal.
The company said today it has been picked by WindPlus as the preferred cable supplier for the project, which is located off the northern Portuguese coast at Viana do Castelo. WindPlus was set up by EDP Renovaveis (ELI:EDPR) and four partners to own the project.
JDR will be responsible for the design and manufacture of array cables to suit MHI Vestas V164 floating turbines. The company said this will be the first application of dynamic cables for floating offshore wind that use the 66-kV technology.
The WindFloat semi-submersible foundation technology has been successfully used in a test project in Portugal. A 2-MW turbine by Vestas mounted on the floating platform has produced more than 16 GWh in almost four years.
The other companies participating in WindPlus are Engie (EPA:GSZ), Repsol Nuevas Energias SA, Mitsubishi Corp (TYO:8058) and Chiyoda Corp (TYO:6366).
