Jan De Nul Group has won an order to produce and install the foundations for the 50 MHI Vestas turbines and the high-voltage substation at Belgium’s 165-MW Nobelwind offshore wind farm.
The Luxembourg-based company said Friday this is the first offshore wind job for its newly acquired offshore jack-up heavy lift vessel Vidar. Apart from the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of 51 monopile foundations, the contract also includes the supply and installation of scour protection and the installation of the wind turbine generators. The steel foundations will be fabricated in Germany and Vietnam.
In April 2016 Jan De Nul Group is to start work under the Nobelwind contract and wrap up in the course of 2017. It did not provide financial details on the order.
The offshore wind park, which will be installed off the coast at Zeebrugge in the Belgian North Sea, requires about EUR 650 million (USD 581.6m) of investment according to a recent report by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA). Once up and running, it is expected to produce as much power as 197,000 homes need.
Japan’s Sumitomo Corp (TYO:8316) and developer Parkwind are working together on the Nobelwind scheme.
