J-Power starts repowering of 15-MW wind farm in Hokkaido

Electric Power Development Co Ltd (TYO:9513), known as J-Power, announced today it has started the repowering of its 14.85-MW Sarakitomanai wind farm on Hokkaido island.

J-Power, through its subsidiary J-Wind Co Ltd, is replacing nine old wind turbines, each of 1.65 MW, with four 4.3-MW units supplied by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE).

The plant has been in operation since December 2001. The new turbines are planned to commence commercial operations in January 2024, according to the announcement.

This is the third repowering project for J-Power’s wind business. In May 2021, the company started another such project at its Shimamaki wind farm.

As of July 2021, J-Power has approximately 616.5 MW of operational and under-construction wind parks in Japan, including renewals. The firm is also currently building the 214.25-MW Triton Knoll wind park in the UK, which would boost its global portfolio to roughly 830.74 MW.
