April 5 (Renewables Now) - UK hydrogen specialist ITM Power (LON:ITM) said today it will perform a multi-MW power-to-gas (P2G) feasibility study for the Massachusetts region.

The study is supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and will be carried out in partnership with local gas and electricity utility Holyoke Gas and Electric (HG&E). It will explore the potential for P2G energy storage and hydrogen for the region and will assess the technical and economic feasibility for P2G and hydrogen fuel derived from renewable energy sources.

"Managing renewables is about harvesting and utilizing the maximum amount of energy possible," said ITM Power managing director Steve. "Generating green hydrogen for energy storage and vehicle fuel is a perfect way to achieve this," Jones added.

The project is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2018 and run for 12 months.

Massachusetts has a target for 200 MWh of energy storage by 2020.
