Italian Senate committee calls for exemption of renewables sector from energy tax
Aug 25, 2011 - In its comments on the planned austerity package, the industry committee at the Italian Senate proposed Wednesday the renewable energy companies to be exempted from the energy tax.
Italy's latest austerity package aimed at saving EUR 45.5 billion (USD 65.569bn) so as to balance the budget in 2013 envisages the so-called Robin Hood tax on electricity generation to rise to 10.5% from 6.5% in 2011-2013 and to also extend to grid operators and renewable energy generation.
The committee's proposal is to leave the tax unchanged at 6.5% and extend it to other sectors, with renewable companies exempted.
The package, which the Government unveiled 10 days ago, is now at the Parliament committees for scrutiny.
