Italian engineering company New Developments and compatriot GR Value have set up a joint venture (JV) to develop close to 2 GW of floating offshore wind projects within Italy’s maritime exclusive economic zone.
The deal was announced on Tuesday by Law firm Watson Farley & Williams (WFW), which was New Developments’ legal counsel in the transaction.
The JV’s plan envisages the construction of a 1,020-MW wind farm with floating foundations, dubbed Elymo. The huge power plant will be installed in the Strait of Sicily and will be powered by 68 turbines. The second proposal, Apeneste, is for a 915-MW floating offshore wind park with 61 turbine generators, to be installed in the southern Adriatic Sea, off Italy’s eastern coast.
The Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition and relevant harbour authorities are currently conducting a preliminary environmental assessment of the projects.
Last month, Swedish floating wind specialist Hexicon AB (STO:HEXI) secured priority rights over two offshore areas to develop floating wind farms in Italy, one of them being for an area south of Sicily with the potential for about 1.2 GW of capacity.
