Investors eyeing offshore wind in Turkey - report

Turkey could have its first offshore wind farm project soon after there is clarity on what the tariff for the technology will be, according to local media.

Following an offshore wind turbine conference in Antalya last December, European manufacturers and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have been looking at the Turkish market, said Daily Sabah. According to the article, potential investors are waiting for an agreement on a tariff.

Turkey has a long Mediterranean coastline and can take advantage of offshore wind to reduce its dependence on energy imports.

Kamran Ghouri of International Antalya University told the publication the country should take the lead in offshore wind development in the Mediterranean, especially in the latest floating foundation technology.

According to Ghouri, a wind power expert, offshore wind farms currently represent the best energy-related investment. He noted that parts for the offshore turbines could be produced or assembled in Turkey.
