Intertek to check turbine design for US' Cape Wind offshore wind farm

Oct 12, 2012 - UK safety services provider Intertek Group (LON:ITRK) has won a deal to evaluate the design of the Europe-made turbines for the Cape Wind offshore wind project in the US so as to ensure their compliance with North American electrical safety standards.

Under the agreement, Intertek will help the unnamed European turbine producer assess and develop the main elements of electrical safety compliance, starting immediately, the UK firm said in a statement yesterday. The service will help limit potential delays on the installation of the offshore wind turbines.

Intertek's global business leader Troy Hewitt said that new electrical standards and codes would be implemented in the US and Canada in the next six to nine months with the aim to reduce hazard risk and increase safety levels for personnel working on-site.

The 130-turbine Cape Wind project, being developed off Cape Cod, Massachusetts by US company Energy Management Inc, is nearing the installation phase. Applications for certain key state and federal permits are to be submitted next month, Intertek added.
