Oct 18, 2013 - The government of India's Gujarat state plans to install waste-to-power facilities in 50 cities, the Indo-Asian News Service said Thursday, citing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
The systems will be constructed on the people public private partnership (PPPP) model as part of a pilot project and will generate electricity and produce fertiliser products and reusable water. The waste-to-energy facilities will be using solid waste as fuel. The output of the plants will go to rural areas in Gujarat and will be used for agricultural purposes, the news agency quoted Modi as saying at a meeting on inclusive urban development. Some of the plants will be installed through partnership with Japanese agencies for development.
The project is seen to encourage organic farming, Modi added, explaining that the incentives farmers get to buy fertilisers and power can be used for developing similar projects or offer bridge financing to already existing schemes of this kind.
According to Modi the same model can be applied to about 500 cities in India.
