India plans to add 5 GW of wind capacity to five-year plan - report
Nov 16, 2011 - India's government is considering adding 5 GW of wind power capacity through retrofitting older wind farms to the 15 GW planned to come from new projects in its 12th five-year plan, Indian daily Economic Times reports, citing government officials.
The draft paper of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy envisages the re-powering or installation of new turbines at old wind farms, most of which were established in the 1990s, according to the daily.
The ministry intents also to require states to sign renewable purchase obligations that bind state governments to cover some of their energy needs from renewable sources, joint secretary Shashi Shekhar said.
India's total installed wind power capacity is some 14 GW.
