Iceland's Landsvirkjun inks 55-MW renewable PPA

Iceland-based power producer Landsvirkjun said on Tuesday it has signed a deal to supply up to 55 MW of renewable power to domestic silicon metal producer Thorsil.

Under the off-take contract, as previously agreed, the electricity will be supplied from Landsvirkjun’s current power station network and the proposed expansion of the 270-MW Burfell hydropower facility. It will be used at Thorsil’s new silicon factory in Helguvik, to be switched on in 2018.

The power purchase agreement (PPA) is subject to some conditions and needs the green light from The European Free Trade Association Surveillance Authority.

State-owned Landsvirkjun is Iceland's main power producer. It operates hydropower, geothermal and wind power plants and generates about 70% of the country’s total electricity. Earlier this week the company said it is on track to bring online the first 45-MW phase of its Theistareykir geothermal plant in the fall of 2017.
