Haizea Wind Group, a wind turbine tower manufacturer from Spain’s Basque Country, has signed a framework agreement with Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) to supply 50 monopiles for its 1.4-GW East Anglia Three offshore wind project in the UK waters.
The contract is worth over EUR 200 million (USD 211.8m) and will enable Haizea to expand its manufacturing and storage facilities at the Port of Bilbao and hire more people, Iberdrola said.
Haizea currently has 48,800 square metres of factory space at the Port, which will be expanded to over 200,000 square metres following an investment of over EUR 150 million. The contractor will also have to build three new warehouses and an additional storage area to store the monopiles before they are loaded onto the transport vessel.
Under the agreement with Iberdrola, Haizea will be in charge of supplying materials, engineering of the manufacturing process and monopile production.
According to Iberdrola, Haizea is one of few European manufacturers capable of making large-size monopiles that can hold 10-MW to 12-MW offshore wind turbines. With new investments in the Bilbao factory, it could be ready to produce even larger and heavier monopile parts for the future wind turbines of up to 20 MW per unit.
Iberdrola developed the East Anglia Three project through its UK unit ScottishPower Renewables. The wind farm will be part of the East Anglia offshore wind hub located in Southern North Sea. Onshore construction started in July 2022.
