August 6 (Renewables Now) - A group of energy-sector companies have come together to take part in the Flexener research project in Spain, with a goal to explore new technologies in the field of renewable energy generation and its integration into the distribution grid system, new storage systems and flexible demand management.

Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) said that it will be the one leading the Flexener consortium, which brings together wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE), Spanish energy conversion expert Ingeteam SA, Minnesota-based OSI Digital Grid Solutions, Spain’s energy services provider Balantia and Wallbox, a Spanish developer of electric vehicle (EV) chargers.

The Flexener project is given a total budget of EUR 7.6 million (USD 8.95m) for research and development (R&D), with large part of it subsidised by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology, an agency of the Spanish ministry of science and innovation.

The research into grid digitalisation will enable the development of more bi-directional power flow systems and help the grid become more robust and flexible as more renewables are hooked close to consumption points.

The Flexener project will represent an opportunity to promote solutions in areas such as EVs and self-consumption systems, which are set to play a decisive role in the consolidation of new development models such as smart cities, Iberdrola added.

The partners will work on the project in the 2021-2023 period.
