The joint venture (JV) between Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) and the Basque Energy Agency has started the permitting process for its first wind farm projects totalling 250 MW in the Basque Country region of Spain.
Through Aixeindar, the partners have submitted paperwork for the 40-MW Azazeta project to the region's Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment. Proposals for three other projects -- Montes de Iturrieta (75 MW), Arkamo (95 MW) and Labraza (40 MW) -- will be deliberated by the Spanish ministry for the ecological transition due to their capacity being over 50 MW or, in the case of Labraza, for stepping into the territory of another autonomous region.
All projects are planned for development in the Basque Country's Alava province, except Labraza, which will also affect parts of the Navarre region.
With the new addition, the Basque region will almost triple its installed wind power capacity from the current 153 MW, the Basque government agency said in the press release.
Owned 60/40 by the Spanish energy giant and the local government, Aixeindar will continue to carry out wind measurements in other locations in the Basque Country to analyze the potential for new projects, the press statement reads.
