Swedish floating wind specialist Hexicon AB (STO:HEXI) on Thursday said its Italian joint venture has secured priority rights over two offshore areas to develop floating wind farms in Italy.
The two areas can accommodate more than 2.5 GW of capacity and are now prioritised for the development by AvenHexicon, a 50/50 joint venture that Hexicon formed with local renewables developer Avapa Energy Srl at the end of 2021.
The joint venture has submitted grid connections and maritime concession applications for five sites in Italy.
Priority rights have been obtained for an area south of Sicily with the potential for about 1.2 GW of capacity and a site northwest of Sardinia that could deliver around 1.35 GW.
Hexicon sees great potential for floating offshore wind in Italy, which aims for a 55% renewables share in electricity generation by 2030.
