SIMEC, part of the Gupta family’s GFG Alliance, said on Monday that it has formally applied to build a 168-MW wind farm at Glenshero in the Highland region of Scotland.
The company has submitted a planning application for a GBP-158-million (USD 205m/EUR 178m) project that involves erecting 39 turbines around eight kilometres north west of Laggan. SIMEC’s plans for the wind farm include developing opportunities for the local community to share in the ownership of the facility. The UK-based RES Group is the developer of the scheme.
If the project gets the green light, about GBP 23 million of the total investment will be spent on the Highland’s economy during construction alone. SIMEC intends to award contracts to local firms for services such as haulage, aggregate, plant hire, concrete and accommodation.
SIMEC noted that there is the option to produce steel for the wind tower structures at its Liberty Dalzell plant in Motherwell and to fabricate the towers at a new neighbouring wind turbine manufacturing facility.
