Grid connection completed for 402-MW Veja Mate wind project

The 402-MW Veja Mate offshore wind project in the German North Sea has been connected to the grid.

The project company said on Tuesday that transmission system operator TenneT connected the wind farm to its offshore grid connection system BorWin2 in mid-November. Two 11.4-km (7.1 mile) 155-kV alternating current (AC) cables are used to link the BorWin beta converter station with Veja Mate's substation.

As the Veja Mate turbines are still to be installed, the grid connection will be used to get power from the grid for construction works. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2017. It will feature 67 Siemens turbines of 6 MW.

The project is owned by Highland Group Holdings Ltd, Siemens Financial Services and a fund managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

TenneT's 800-MW BorWin2 grid connection has been in operation since January 2015 and is already connecting the Global Tech I offshore wind farm.
