Aug 6, 2012 - US firm Green Energy Renewable Solutions Inc (PINK: EWRL) said Monday it had signed a letter of intent with Puerto Rican Landfill Solutions LLC to jointly remediate the Yabucoa municipal landfill and install waste-to-energy and recycling facilities at the site.
The USD-100-million (EUR 80.8m) project’s key goal is to separate and process all municipal solid waste coming to the landfill, cutting the volume left there by 90% or more when the whole facility is fully operational.
Under the letter of intent, Green Energy and Landfill Solutions will form a 50/50 joint venture to immediately commence work on the landfill’s remediation. The landfill, which has been idle since 2011, is expected to reopen in 120 to 180 days. After that phase, the entity will construct a waste-to-energy plant with a capacity of up to 15 MW and a recycling facility to recover some 200 tonnes per day of metals, plastics, quality paper and cardboard plus 350 barrels of sweet crude oil equivalent.
The landfill is expected to process no less than 1,000 tonnes of waste daily.
