Greece opens tender for geothermal studies at four areas

The Greek Ministry of the Environment and Energy has opened an international tender to select companies willing to assess the geothermal potential in four areas in the northeastern region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

A notice for the competition was published on the Ministry’s website last week, with applications to be accepted by October 4. The tender aims to lease the right to study the geothermal potential of Serres, Kavala, Akropotamos and Evros areas.

In May last year, Greece adopted its first national climate protection law that set interim targets as part of a 2050 net-zero strategy, clearing the path towards the country’s exit of lignite power generation by 2028.

Two months earlier, the Minister of Environment and Energy Kostas Skrekas defined the terms for awarding exploration licenses for the geothermal potential and announced that the development of geothermal energy will be given major priority in the National Plan for Energy and Climate as a step to cut energy costs and lower dependence on Russian gas.
