Greece mulls cutting tariffs in next BESS tender - report

Greece’s energy ministry is considering reducing the tariffs for the country’s second tender for battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, Energypress reports.

The plan is being considered in view of the intense competition in the inaugural tender round held earlier this year. The second call is expected to be issued in September and offer 300 MW of capacity, according to earlier media reports.

The proposed tariff reduction for the upcoming tender will cut the total investment aid for installing batteries, which in the first round was up to EUR 200,000 (USD 218,884) per MW. As a result, this could lift the auctioned capacity above the 300-MW goal, unnamed sources have said.

Greece completed its maiden standalone BESS tender in July, awarding 411.8 MW of projects. Investment and operating aid was granted to 12 projects put forward by seven proponents. Bids in the competitive round were priced at between EUR 33,948 per MW and EUR 64,122 per MW, with the weighted average price of the successful proposals standing at EUR 49,748 per MW annually. Offers were capped at EUR 115,000 per MW per year.
