Globeleq celebrates opening of 138-MW S African wind park

Jul 10, 2014 - UK-based, Africa-focused power producer Globeleq Generation Ltd said today it had inaugurated the 138-MW Jeffreys Bay wind farm on South Africa’s Eastern Cape.

The completion of the wind park follows the April inauguration of two Globeleq-controlled solar photovoltaic (PV) plants of 50 MW each, namely the De Aar and Droogfontein PV facilities, located on the Northern Cape. All three of the projects were developed under the first round of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP), which aims to install 3,725 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2016.

Jeffreys Bay alone is estimated to produce 460 GWh of electricity a year. The wind park features 60 turbines by Germany’s Siemens (ETR:SIE), each with a capacity of 2.3 MW.

Other shareholders in the three plants include Mainstream Renewable Power, Old Mutual Plc (LON:OML), Thebe Investment Corp Pty Ltd, Enzani Technologies Pty Ltd, Usizo Engineering Pty Ltd and the Amadla Omoya Trust. Globeleq is fully-owned by private equity firm Actis.
