Sep 19, 2011 - Nigerian biofuel producer Global Biofuels Ltd will implement a clean development project (CDP) that includes biofuel, electricity, edible oil and cattle in Nigeria, the national newspaper Vanguard reported yesterday.
The company, in cooperation with its financial advisors, has concluded arrangements to execute the CDM project which is named Grow Your Energy (GYE), according to the newspaper.
When completed, the project will result in the production of 240 million litres of ethanol ar day, electricity from a 30 MW biomass co-generation plant, grain and 5,000 head of cattle, and offset millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, the group's managing director, Felix Obada, said at a briefing.
Under the GYE initiative, sorghum has been isolated and cultivated in commercial quantity to produce biofuels and electricity, the company explains on its website. Juice from the stalk of the crop can be fermented and distilled into biofuels and the biomass leftover can be processed in a co-generation facility to produce electricity. Thus, the farmer can continue to use the grain for food and can sell the stalk. The shredded leaves and other wastes from the feedstock can be also used as animal feed for cattle fattening.
