Dec 10, 2012 - Israel-based clean tech firm Blue Sphere Corp (OTCBB:BLSP) said last week it had been given the go-ahead for its first landfill gas-to-energy project in Africa from the government of Ghana.
The approval for the plant at the Oti Sanitary Landfill in Ghana will enable the company to register its pan-African programme with the United Nations under the Kyoto Protocol and get the right to develop an indefinite amount of such projects across the continent over the coming 30 years.
According to Blue Sphere, every landfill gas plant it develops will generate between EUR 200,000 (USD 260,000) and EUR 800,000 in annual revenue for the company for at least 21 years.
The company has already agreed five landfill projects in Ghana and has found a number of promising sites for projects in Ghana, Nigeria and other countries that it expects to sign next year. Four of these projects are ready to start extracting landfill gas under the Kyoto Protocol, while the fifth one is expected to be ready in 2013 or 2014.
Blue Sphere is currently holding talks on the sale of energy from its landfill projects in Ghana to the Electricity Company of Ghana. Full financing for the first two projects in Ghana is already secured and the party providing the funds is also willing to consider investing in the other sites, the company said.
