Gevo secures US patent for isobutanol extraction technology
Oct 10, 2012 - US renewable chemicals and biofuels company Gevo Inc (NASDAQ:GEVO) said Tuesday it had been awarded a US patent covering its integrated fermentation technology that allows the easy extraction of isobutanol.
US patent No. 8,283,505 protects the company’s proprietary separation device designed to enable the cost-efficient separation of isobutanol from other compounds in the fermentation mixture, Gevo’s executive vice president and general counsel Brett Lund said.
He added that the patented system allows the continuous extraction of isobutanol during fermentation, thus increasing the productivity of the genetically modified yeast which would otherwise be slowed down by the high concentrations of isobutanol.
