The wind power segment of Gestamp Renewables has won a 20-year off-take contract for the 102-MW Copperton wind project in South Africa’s Northern Cape province.
Gestamp Wind said in a statement on Monday it expects to sign the power purchase agreement (PPA) and initiate construction by the first quarter of 2016. The EUR-150-million (USD 169.7m) project was selected as a preferred bidder in the fourth round of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) programme. It is seen to start commercial operations in late 2017.
Gestamp Wind has already completed one such plant in South Africa, namely the 75-MW Noblesfontein wind park, and has a further 785 MW under development in a number of locations within the country.
Overall, the company has more than 898 MW in operation and construction along with a 1-GW-plus portfolio of advanced projects in various markets.
