German wind developer MLK to add 40 MWh of BESS near own substations

German wind project developer MLK Group plans to install battery systems near its own substations that will be capable of storing 40 MWh of energy to balance the power grid.

The battery systems will be supplied by German manufacturer Tricera energy GmbH, MLK said in a press statement. As many as 28,000 battery modules bundled in 15 containers will store mostly excess wind energy that cannot be integrated into the power grid and feed it into the grid when needed. The wind developer noted that the battery systems will balance the grid in a particularly efficient way as they react to fluctuations quickly.

The first two storage facilities will be set up in Blumberg near Berlin and in Jacobsdorf near Frankfurt (Oder) with commissioning planned for next summer.

Several small ground-mounted solar plants will be built near the batteries to supply part of the power required for the operation of the storage systems, the substation and nearby wind turbines.

MLK Group has already installed about 600 MW of wind capacity across Germany with a focus on Brandenburg and Rhineland. The group operates also a number of substations and biomass-powered plants. Now, it is working on its first photovoltaic projects.
